PRESS RELEASE: D6 Racer JEREMY HIGGINS to Compete at PIKES PEAK

5 Feb 2019 by Don Heider

Batavia, New York (February 2, 2019) – American Flat Track racer Jeremy Higgins will be competing at the world famous Pikes Peak International Hill Climb on June 30th. Higgins will compete on a custom motorcycle built by the Rochester Institute of Technology Electric Vehicle Team.

In addition to racing in the American Flat Track series, Higgins will take on this new challenge of racing at this event for the first time. There are currently 28 different motorcycles accepted to race this year and Higgins will be one of 14 riders to compete from the United States.

“I am really excited for the opportunity to run Pikes Peak,” said Higgins. “This has always been one of those things where I thought it would be very cool to compete in, but I never thought I would get the opportunity. With the added elevation of this event, I have shifted my training a little bit and I will do everything I can to have the best results possible.”

The motorcycle is based on a 2008 KTM Super Duke 990. The bike utilizes a liquid-cooled 400V, 11kWh battery pack, an Emrax 268 motor and a Rinehart motor controller to produce 100kW (130hp). The bike will utilize control systems designed in-house, including a battery management system, a thermal management system, and a low voltage subsystem.

“It has been a long-time goal for our team to compete at the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb,” said Electric Vehicle Team design lead Dan Shapiro. “We are taking what we’ve learned from building and racing our first bike, REV1, and bringing it to a whole new level. Working on a deadline shorter than any we’ve challenged ourselves to before, we are building the REV2 to prove the viability of high-performance electric vehicles at one of the most ambitious courses out there. We are excited to team up with Jeremy and see the results of our hard work at the 97th running of this prestigious event.”

Higgins will do some testing on the bike prior to the event on some go-kart tracks within the area.
